Even Faster Web SitesSteve Souders (Google)Steve's book High Performance Web Sites describes the 14 best practices he developed while working as the Chief Performance Yahoo!. YSlow, the Firebug extension he created, codified those best practices. Now working at Google, Steve discusses the next set of best practices he's discovered, including the impact of iframes and where to place (and where not to place) inline script blocks.
Underneath the Cov I/ers at Google: Current Systems and Future DirectionsJeff Dean (Google)Over the past several years, we have built a collection of systems and tools that simplify the storing and processing of large-scale data sets, and the construction of heavily-used public services based on these data sets. These systems are intended to work well in Google's computational environment, which consists of large numbers of commodity machines connected by commodity networking hardware. Our systems handle issues like storage reliability and availability in the face of machine failures, and our processing tools make it relatively easy to write robust computations that run reliably and efficiently on thousands of machines. In this talk I'll highlight some of the systems we have built, and discuss some challenges and future directions for new systems.

Painless Python for Proficient Programmers Part IIAlex Martelli (Google)Python is a popular very-high-level programming language, with a clean and spare syntax, simple and regular semantics, a large standard library and a wealth of third-party extensions, libraries and tools. With several production-quality open-source implementations available, many excellent books, and growing acceptance in both industry and academia, Python can play some useful role within a huge variety of software development projects. Moreover, Python is really easy to learn, particularly (though not exclusively) for programmers who are skilled at such languages as Java, C++ and C. This talk addresses software developers who are experienced in other languages but have had limited or no exposure to Python yet, and offers a rapid overview of the main characteristics of the language, plus a brief synopsis of its main implementations, its standard library, and Python's use with Google App Engine.
Google Gears and MySpace - an Exploration of Powering Search on the ClientOwyn Richen (MySpace)MySpace does not have particular ceilings on how much data a user can accrue, including relational data linking that user with others. MySpace is exploring the use of Google Gears to provide features for users that have a considerable amount of data to churn through. Join us to see some areas we've explored and hear a detailed technical discussion about one particular feature--adding search to our mail system. We'll discuss the challenges we faced, including privacy, dealing with multiple users per client, synchronizing multiple clients, and scaling all these pieces in a heavy-usage environment.
Daniel Ellsberg visits Google's Mountain View, CA headquarters to discuss his book "Secrets: A Memoir of Vietnam and the Pentagon Papers." This event took place on August 22, 2008, as part of the Authors@Google series.Daniel Ellsberg is a former American military analyst employed by the RAND Corporation who precipitated a national political controversy in 1971 when he released the Pentagon Papers, a top-secret Pentagon study of government decision-making about the Vietnam War, to The New York Times and other newspapers.Richard Nixon made attempts to prevent anymore extracts from the Pentagon Papers being published. The Supreme Court ruled against Nixon. Ellsberg's trial, on twelve felony counts posing a possible sentence of 115 years, was dismissed in 1973 on grounds of governmental misconduct against him, which led to the convictions of several White House aides and figured in the impeachment proceedings against President Richard Nixon.Since the end of the Vietnam War he has been a lecturer, writer and activist on the dangers of the nuclear era and unlawful interventions. In 2002 he published Secrets.Link to Ellsberg's official site: http://www.ellsberg.netThis event took place on August 22, 2008, as a part of the Authors@Google series.
