The implications for the online dating industry are enormous. What happens when PlentyOfFish, Match and eHarmony become services that act on our profiles, and third parties emerge that can provide superior service? You could have a user interface from one company, a search mechanism from another and a communications system from a third. The opportunity for the dating industry to evolve into something approaching efficiency are mind-boggling.
Of course there are more questions than answers for now, but thats what makes it so exciting.

I saw a press release about P2P dating software but am unable to locate the actual software. Let me know if you find a url that links to the actual software.
The old fashioned way of signing up for a internet dating website, putting your profile in with hundreds of others and paying a monthly fee for the privilege of searching that database of profiles is about to become totally obsolete. Dating Share, a phenomenal new P2P Dating Software is changing everything about how we handle romance using online dating sites.
Dating Share is a completely new way to handle online dating. You don’t pay a monthly fee to use our website. Instead, you download a P2P (peer-to-peer) software product that puts you directly in touch with a whole community of singles looking for romance online. P2P is the same technology used for music downloads and file sharing so you know this is the most up-to-date technology the internet has to offer.
The idea of Peer-Peer dating clients has been around for a while, but never seems to catch on. There are many desktop P2P clients like LimeWire and Transmission that are reasonably straightforward to use, but I'm having a difficult time seeing the general public actually downloading the client, searching for people, and figuring out how to communicate.

Today I met with someone who was active and extremely successful in the online dating space circa 2000 and it was interesting to hear stories about what it was like to start a site, achieve success and be acquired back in the day. Inspiration is good.
If you're in the dating industry and find yourself in Boston, look me up.

TechCrunch has a good post about why US-based social networks are failing in Japan. I find the implications of international expansion especially interesting given how Match and other major dating sites are looking to establish a presence in Asian markets.
Social networks have become integrative elements of modern American youth culture over the last years, shaping social patterns and changing the ways that people communicate. When taken abroad, these services have to deal with a large number of cross-cultural peculiarities by their very nature.
Societal and cultural gaps are particularly evident in the case of Japan. Market entry in this country with a “What works in the US must also work over there”-attitude is going awry for both Facebook and MySpace. It’s not a stereotype that communication tends to be nonverbal in Japan. The society generally puts more emphasis on the community rather than on the individual. Also, security plays a major role in many aspects of Japanese life.
The third comment mentions why Match can't catch Meetic in Europe. Lots of interesting comments about the social, cultural and technical hurdles international brands face when attempting to enter global markets.
